365+ Days of Living the Dale Carnegie Principles

Day 922.  Wednesday, October 2, 2013
As I was sitting waiting for my private dance lesson to begin, Jana, an instructor came up to me.

Jana:  “Oh my gosh, Smiling Daffodil!  I have to tell you—another instructor showed me a photo today from the dance competition.  It was a photo of me dancing.  I couldn’t believe it.  I asked if it was the professional photographer that took the shot.  It was amazing!”

Smiling Daffodil:  “Oh thank you!  I’m so glad you got to see the photo.  I have tons more—I’ll send them to you.”

A group dance class finished.  I saw Harold and wondered if he’d say anything about the photos I posted of him.  I told myself not to expect it.

Harold:  “Smiling Daffodil, I saw the photos.  Thank you so much for taking them.  I really appreciate that you took the time.  They are really nice.  Thank you.”

Smiling Daffodil:  “I’m so glad!  I have more of you—but it’s taking me awhile to go through them.  In fact, there’s an awesome shot of you—it might be my favorite.  I can’t wait for you to see!”

Harold:  “Thanks again.”

The Dale Carnegie principles featured in this story are from How to Win Friends and Influence People:
Principle 2.  Give honest, sincere appreciation.
Principle 9.  Make the other person feel important—and do it sincerely.

The lesson in this story:  You like the feeling of being appreciated and valued.  Take the time to appreciate others.  The way my friends made me feel—inspires me to put more effort into noticing and appreciating the people in my life.
