Day 924.  Friday, October 4, 2013
I sat down and hoped to be somewhat invisible at the dance party.  Dana was sitting nearby.

Smiling Daffodil:  “Did you enjoy last weekend’s dance showcase?”

Dana:  “Oh, I did.  I was so nervous though—my hands were shaking.”

We continued discussing highlights from the event.

Dana:  I already started cutting the fabric for a new dress for the next event.”

Smiling Daffodil:  “Really?  Is it the same style as the other one?”

We discussed all the details about her new dress.  I found this topic particularly interesting and continued to ask questions.  Dana also seemed to enjoy telling me about it.

Smiling Daffodil:  “I know a fabric store you might enjoy.  I’ll send you the information.”

Dana:  “I used to sew Civil War costumes… in fact I had a business.”

Smiling Daffodil:  “Wow!  Is this what you do for a living?”

Dana began to explain her background and her different careers over the years.  This was the most we’ve ever talked—and I thought she was quite interesting—so I was happy to listen.

Smiling Daffodil:  “If you find you need a photographer for your business let me know.  I’d be happy to do it as a favor.  It’s something I enjoy—and photos can make all the difference for an online business.”

Dana:  “Thank you.  I certainly will keep you in mind.”

Around this time I was asked to dance—sadly our conversation came to an end.

The Dale Carnegie principles featured in this story are from How to Win Friends and Influence People:
Principle 7.  Be a good listener.  Encourage others to talk about themselves.
Principle 8.  Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.

The lesson in this story:  The world doesn’t revolve around you—in the sense that you don’t have to monopolize the conversation.  Let the other person talk about themselves and their interests.  You’ll learn more about the person this way and you’ll build a relationship in the process.
