365+ Days of Living the Dale Carnegie Principles

Day 926.  Sunday, October 6, 2013
I had three goals for today:  work in my photography studio, catch up on this blog and go to the gym.

I made surprisingly good progress in my photography studio.

Next:  Catch up on the Carnegie blog.  Not counting today’s story, that’s posting 30 blog stories to the blog!

Technically, all the stories are written.  But they were written on 3 different devices—depending on the day and circumstance.  Some were on my laptop, others on my iPad and still others on my phone.  If they were written on my phone they somehow get transferred to my email account.  So much of my time is spent hunting down the stories.

The other part of the time is spent proofing the stories then selecting the right photos.

Doing this task daily is hard enough with one story.  But 29 stories.  Oh my.

I decided to stay focused and plow through each story.  Careful, methodical clicks of my mouse button and using short cut keys on my laptop enabled me to zip through the process.

Granted, it took ALL day but I could see the light at the end of the tunnel as the stories I began to edit felt like yesterday’s stories.  (They were from last week… as opposed to two weeks ago.)

I kept all distractions at bay—no interacting on Facebook, no distractions with snacks, no television.

The Dale Carnegie principle I used is from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living:  (I applied items A and B)
Apply these four good working habits:

  1. Clear your desk of all papers except those relating to the immediate problem at hand.
  2. Do things in the order of their importance.
  3. When you face a problem, solve it then and there if you have the facts necessary to make a decision.
  4. Learn to organize, deputize and supervise.

The lesson in this story:  Don’t put a task off for weeks because it gets overwhelming to catch up! But in the event you must put a task off.. when you do return to the task—just stay focused.  Plow forward.  Keep going.  Focus on the end result:  the finish line!    And in my case… the gym will have to wait.  I need my rest.
