365+ Days of Living the Dale Carnegie Principles

Day 949.  Tuesday, October 29, 2013
Midday I reminded Jane I needed some information from her.  She agreed and I carried on with my day.

At 4:45 I noticed I still hadn’t received the items. That was ok—I got to the office late anyway.  I will stay late.  Odds are the materials are on their way.  I don’t want to nag Jane.  She knows the materials are due every Tuesday.

I started working on a new project that needed attention.

Then I heard Jane exclaim.. “Oh my gosh!  Are you waiting on me?”

She had forgotten.

Smiling Daffodil:  “Actually, no problem—I’m working on the XYZ project.”

This was a true statement.  I also needed her materials before I could leave for the day.  But she already knew that and I wasn’t going to add to her stress by saying, “Yes, I am waiting on you.”

So I continued working on the XYZ project.

Around 6:30 pm I received her materials.

Jane: “I’m so sorry you had to wait.  I was engrossed in the ABC project I didn’t realize how late it was.”

Smiling Daffodil:  “That’s ok.”

I edited her materials and sent them to my team to process.

The Dale Carnegie principles used are from How to Stop Worrying and Start Living:
Cooperate with the inevitable.

The lesson in this story:  Sometimes you just have to accept you cannot control every variable, every person’s behavior, every outcome- especially when dealing with individuals who have authority over you.  If you stop and think about all these factors you’ll just get frustrated, overwhelmed or mad.  Focus on what you have control over.  In my story I focused on getting my tasks complete.
