365+ Days of Living the Dale Carnegie Principles

Day 956.  Tuesday, November 5, 2013
I walked in to Starbucks and was happy to see Emily.

Smiling Daffodil: “I haven’t seen you in awhile.”

Emily:  “I work different shifts these days—usually I’m off by the time you come in.  By the way, thank you for the wedding gift.”

Smiling Daffodil:  “You’re welcome.  I was thinking you probably were away on your honeymoon.”

Emily:  “No!  I went back to work a couple days after the wedding.  We’re trying to save up money.”

We continued talking—and I learned Emily works 3 jobs.

Emily:  “My hope is to go back to college—I love school!  I was so disappointed once I graduated.  I missed it!”

I also learned she plans on getting a couple bachelor’s degrees and her long term goal is to become a judge.

Emily:  “Yeah… so since I’m not at school this semester, it seems like I have it easy.  I used to work multiple jobs and go to school.  So this is nothing!”

Smiling Daffodil:  “Wow!  I have nothing to complain about anymore!”

This evening I returned to the gym.  I hadn’t been in weeks and have been struggling to find interest and motivation. I was inspired by Emily who finds the time and the motivation to do everything she does.

The Dale Carnegie principle used in this story is from How to Win Friends and Influence People:
Principle 7.  Be a good listener.  Encourage others to talk about themselves.

The lesson in this story:  Take the time to listen and you might just become inspired to implement positive change in your life rather than complain about your life!
