365+ Days of Living the Dale Carnegie Principles

Day 958.  Thursday, November 7, 2013
Smiling Daffodil:  “Roe, I was reading the photography books and the author advised the following techniques…”

I explained the methods I learned for getting sharp photos…the implication being my photos aren’t any good because I don’t use the method.

Roe listened.

Roe:  “The thing is Smiling Daffodil, I have the technical knowledge while you have the eye. You capture something special.  And now you’re learning more technical aspects.  This is good.”

I listened.

Roe:  “But remember, whatever you do, don’t let the books discourage you or cause your photos to become sterile – unless that’s the look you’re going for, of course.  Keep doing what you’re doing.”

I looked squarely at Roe as he spoke and let the words soak in.  I needed to hear his words this evening.

The Dale Carnegie principles Roe used in this story are from How to Win Friends and Influence People:
Principle 28.  Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
Principle 7.  Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.

The lesson in this story:    Take the time to listen and give encouragement to others.  Sometimes that’s all it takes to help clear away the doubt.
